Connacht Rugby has announced that team captain Cian Prendergast has signed a new three-year contract, committing his future to the province until 2028.

Prendergast, who was appointed captain ahead of the current season, has been a standout both on and off the field since joining Connacht in 2020.

He initially joined the Connacht Academy and made his professional debut in October 2020 against Edinburgh.

Since then, the back-row forward has established himself as a key player, earning his first professional contract after an impressive 2021 season, during which he made 20 appearances in Connacht’s 24 matches.

His continued strong performances earned him a call-up to the Ireland senior squad, where he made his debut during the 2022 Autumn Nations Series against Fiji, collecting three caps to date. Prendergast was also named in the Ireland squad for the upcoming Autumn Nations Series.

In addition to his playing duties, Prendergast was entrusted with the captaincy this season, supported by vice-captains Dave Heffernan and Joe Joyce. His leadership has been vital in Connacht’s ongoing campaign, both on and off the pitch.

Expressing his delight at the new contract, Prendergast reaffirmed his commitment to Connacht for the next three years.

“I’m thrilled to be committing my future to Connacht for a further three years. I’ve enjoyed every minute since arriving 4 years ago, and with the new stadium and HPC on the way there’s a very exciting future ahead.

"I can’t wait to play my part in that and represent the people of Connacht for at least another three seasons, and give them the success we believe is possible.”
