England have confirmed that Byron McGuigan will join Steve Borthwick’s coaching staff on a full-time basis from June, giving the national setup another permanent addition as preparations continue for the next phase of the international cycle.

The former Scotland international had already been working with England since last summer and will now move into the role on a full-time basis.

Byron McGuigan Takes Full-Time England Coaching Role

McGuigan first linked up with England ahead of the 2025 tour of Argentina and the United States, combining duties with his club role at Sale Sharks.

Borthwick said McGuigan had brought strong energy and a detailed understanding of the game, adding that his input with players had already proved important.

“Byron is an excellent addition to our coaching group,” said Borthwick.

“Since arriving with us last summer, he has made a strong impact through his detailed understanding of the game and the energy he brings"

England Coaching Focus For Byron McGuigan

McGuigan’s responsibilities will centre on collision skills, the aerial contest and working closely with the back three.

Borthwick also highlighted McGuigan’s work in individual player development, suggesting his influence has extended beyond one specific unit in the squad.

“His work in supporting the development of our back-three players has already been valuable, and he has also invested a huge amount of time into individual player development across the squad. We’re excited about the contribution he will continue to make.”

Byron McGuigan Brings Playing And Coaching Experience

McGuigan made more than 100 appearances for Sale Sharks and won 10 caps for Scotland before retiring and moving into coaching. He also gained experience with grassroots clubs and later led Sale Sharks during the 2023/24 PREM Rugby Cup campaign before becoming defence coach at the club in November 2024.

McGuigan said it was a huge honour to be part of the England setup and praised the players for their willingness to learn and improve.

“It’s a huge honour to be part of the England set-up,” added McGuigan.

“Since coming into the environment last summer, I’ve been really impressed by the players’ appetite to learn and improve.

“I’m excited to continue supporting the group and helping the players develop as we keep pushing standards forward.”
