Camborne delivered the weekend’s most emphatic result in National One, winning 59-26 at Cambridge, while Plymouth Albion maintained their perfect start with a 31-21 victory away to Sale FC.

The result at Ellgia Fields carried extra weight after a difficult week for Cambridge.

Their 102-0 defeat at Plymouth the previous Saturday prompted a statement from the club’s board, which acknowledged the concern among supporters and called for improvement in performance and competitiveness.

Cambridge did respond on the scoreboard, scoring 26 points against Camborne and they were also level at 19-19 at one stage. But conceding 59, and losing for a sixth successive time, means the questions raised by the board remain very much in view.

The club had also acknowledged a significant number of injuries and unavailable players, while making clear that its standards and expectations remain unchanged.

That context was part of the discussion in TRU’s recent National One video with Chris Heal and Mark Ashcroft, which looked at the campaign so far, the start made by leaders Plymouth Albion and the teams to watch.

The latest results have given that conversation a new focus: how quickly can Cambridge turn a difficult opening into the response their board and supporters are seeking?

Camborne, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from their performance. The visitors scored 59 points in their fourth straight away win, showing the attacking threat that has made them one of the division’s early pace-setters.

As Chris Heal highlighted, the Matavesi brothers were influential, with Sam scoring a hat-trick while Fraser Honey’s kicking was massively impactful. For Cambridge, there were points on the board, but the defensive challenge remains stark.

Plymouth remain the team setting the standard, though. Their win at Sale made it six victories from six, extending the momentum discussed in TRU’s Round Six Preview. Sale made them work for the result, but Albion left with a deserved win and their unbeaten record intact, plus a Noah Fenton brace of tries.

Tonbridge Juddians (2nd) edged Bishop’s Stortford 36-32 in one of the day’s closest contests. The match swung between the sides, but TJs dug in to hold off Stortford’s challenge as they claimed a sixth bonus-point win on the spin.

Leeds Tykes also came through a tough encounter, beating Dings Crusaders 40-35. Dings led 21-7 at the break, but another strong second-half showing from Pete Seabourne and Pete Lucock's side saw the Tykes turn the game in their favour.

At the other end of the scoring scale, London Scottish and Sheffield shared 104 points at the Athletic Ground. Scottish won 64-40, with a hat-trick from Connor Moyse helping to headline their attacking display.

Elsewhere, Rosslyn Park picked up an away win, defeating Birmingham Moseley 31-21, while Rams beat Bury St Edmunds 27-7.

The full National One results were:

  • Sale FC 21-31 Plymouth Albion
  • Cambridge 26-59 Camborne
  • Bishop’s Stortford 32-36 Tonbridge Juddians
  • Dings Crusaders 35-40 Leeds Tykes
  • London Scottish 64-40 Sheffield
  • Birmingham Moseley 21-31 Rosslyn Park
  • Rams 27-7 Bury St Edmunds

Plymouth’s unbeaten run keeps them out in front, and Camborne’s points haul strengthens their position among the early challengers. But Cambridge’s week will be judged against the board’s call for a positive response. They scored more than they had the week before.

With players returning drip by drip, the next test is whether Craig Newby's side can build a performance that is both more competitive and more complete.
