Tom Coventry has announced his decision to resign from the position of head coach of English rugby club London Irish.

The club has revealed the two parties reached the decision "by mutual agreement" with Coventry returning back home to New Zealand owing to family reasons.

Coventry, who took charge of Irish in July last year, had a wretched season with the club after winning just four games throughout the season and ending at the bottom of the table.

Irish chief executive Bob Casey said the decision was taken after a review of club's performance and in the best interest of both parties.

"Having undertaken a review of the past season and taken time to consider its implications, and given his family situation, our discussions with Tom have resulted in agreement that it is in his best interests to return to New Zealand.

"On behalf of the board and all associated with London Irish, we thank him for his efforts over the past season and wish him and his family well for the future."

In a statement released by London Irish, Coventry added the club is in a decent position to make a return back to the top tier of English rugby.

"London Irish is in a good place to bounce immediately back into the top tier of English rugby.

"The club has recruited well, with a sound balance of experience and youth supported by an excellent academy programme.

"I wish the club all the best in their future direction and drive for Premiership status."
