Richie Mo’unga will not be available for the All Blacks’ upcoming Tests against the Springboks in South Africa after New Zealand Rugby confirmed it will not relax its overseas-based player eligibility policy.

The star fly-half has signed an 18-month deal to return to Canterbury and the Crusaders ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup, but he is still not immediately eligible for All Blacks selection.

Under NZR rules, players must be contracted and playing in New Zealand before they can be considered.

NZR Stands Firm On Selection Policy

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Lancaster said no exemption had been requested for Mo’unga, despite public debate over whether the All Blacks should be allowed to pick overseas-based players in special cases.

“We’re very clear and have a strong amount of belief in our policy for selection to the All Blacks,” Lancaster told Newstalk ZB.

Lancaster said NZR still believes the current policy is important because it helps keep elite players in New Zealand and protects the strength of domestic competitions.

He also warned that relaxing the rule for one player could create problems for others who turned down overseas offers and stayed in New Zealand under the existing system.

Mo’unga Still Not Eligible For South Africa Tour

Mo’unga’s absence is a major talking point because New Zealand’s matches against South Africa are among the most intense fixtures in world rugby.

However, the reference to Rugby Championship matches needs correction. The Rugby Championship is not being played in 2026 because of the revised international calendar. The All Blacks’ South Africa fixtures are part of the wider South Africa tour and rivalry series, not the regular Rugby Championship.
