Martin Corry's legendary perspective

The England v Ireland Legends Game will take place at The Twickenham Stoop on Friday 16 March 2012, KO 7:45, in support of the Stuart Mangan Memorial Cup.

Once again all proceeds from the game will be donated to charities supporting rugby injuries and it will be a great chance to see some of the legends of the game in a competitive game on what should be a hugely entertaining rugby weekend with the final round of the Six Nations, including England v Ireland the day after at Twickenham.

This year’s star studded line up of England and Ireland’s legendary players include Martin Corry, Jason Leonard, Austin Healy, Jason Robinson and Shane Byrne, Mick Galway, Gary Halpin, Malcolm O’Kelly. The match will kick off the St Patrick’s weekend in style, with thrilling rugby and pre-match entertainment.

Rugby Union Fans spoke exclusively with Martin Corry to find out about the game; “It started a couple of years back as most things do over a pint and myself Shane Byrne got together to raise money for the Matt Hampson trust, a club colleague of mine at Leicester, who broke his neck ,so wanted to raise money for him and there was a guy in Ireland who died from a neck related injury due to rugby, so we thought it would be great if the night before the England Ireland international we play a legends game get a few old boys back together and give the punters who are coming to watch the international another reason for a bit of drinking and a social event.

We did it once at the Stoop and 11,000 people came which was great, but it meant that amount of money being raised for charity we’ve got to do this every year, so there England Ireland legends game was born.”

Martin went on to explain what fans can expect from the game: “It’s a very competitive game with both previous games being really close. It’s a game that is played in the right spirit, a lot of us played rugby in the amateur days and so it’s one of those things that yes we want to win but we also know that with the exception of couple of superstars we are not as good as we once were and the prime focus is raising money.”
