Ma'a Nonu joins Sharks in mentorship role

The Sharks have confirmed that All Blacks great Ma’a Nonu has joined the Durban-based franchise in a high-performance mentorship role ahead of the new season.

Nonu, one of the most decorated centres in modern rugby, will spend the next few months with the Sharks as part of a programme aimed at developing the club’s emerging players.

The 44-year-old is not being presented as a marquee playing signing, but as a mentor and leadership figure who will work with head coach JP Pietersen and the wider coaching staff.

Sharks Add All Blacks Experience

Nonu won 103 caps for New Zealand and was part of the All Blacks squads that won the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015.

He also enjoyed successful club spells with the Hurricanes, Blues, Highlanders, Toulon, Black Rams Tokyo and San Diego Legion. His experience at the highest level is expected to help the Sharks’ younger backs understand the standards required in elite rugby.

Nonu To Mentor Young Sharks Players

The Sharks said Nonu will help develop young outside backs including Jurenzo Julius, Jaco Williams and Zekhethelo Siyaya.

Reports also indicate that Nonu could be available for selection if needed, offering experienced cover at inside centre while André Esterhuizen is away on international duty.

Nonu said he was excited to work with the Sharks and give back to the game.

“The Sharks are one of the world’s most iconic rugby clubs and Durban has always been a special place for me to travel to.

“One of my earliest away matches in Super Rugby was played here, and I’ve carried fond memories of this city and its passionate rugby fans ever since.”
