Leicester Tigers 62-3 Newcastle Red Bulls, Mattioli Woods Welford Road

Leicester Tigers produced a ruthless display at Mattioli Woods Welford Road to beat Newcastle Red Bulls 62-3 and collect a full five points in the Gallagher PREM.

The home side were far too strong from the opening minutes, building a huge first-half lead and then continuing the punishment after the break in a one-sided contest.

Newcastle were under pressure almost immediately and found themselves chasing the game from the start. Leicester’s maul, width and finishing quality proved decisive, while Newcastle’s discipline problems made an already difficult task even harder.

Tigers Race Into Early Control

Leicester opened the scoring in the third minute when former Newcastle hooker Jamie Blamire guided a driving maul over in the right corner. Newcastle were already down to 14 men at that stage after Elliott Obatoyinbo was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on.

The visitors did get on the board early when Christian Wade’s break earned field position and Ben Healy kicked a penalty from close range, but that was as good as it got for Newcastle.

Their problems deepened when Ollie Leatherbarrow was shown a 20-minute red card for a dangerous challenge to the lower limb. Leicester quickly took advantage. Blamire scored again from another line-out maul, before Gabriel Hamer-Webb crossed for the first of his five tries after the Tigers moved the ball sharply to the left.

Hamer-Webb soon added a second, and then his hat-trick try arrived before the break as Leicester continued to tear through the Newcastle defence. By halftime, the Tigers led 31-3 and the result was already effectively beyond doubt.

Hamer-Webb Runs Riot After The Break

Newcastle made changes at halftime, but the pattern of the game did not change. Although the visitors had more territory in the early part of the second half, Leicester struck first again when Izaia Perese finished from a cross-field kick.

Hamer-Webb then added two more tries in quick succession, first off a well-timed line from a line-out play and then by gliding through a midfield hole. His five-try haul underlined Leicester’s total control of the contest.

Radwan Adds Late Pain

The scoring did not stop there. Former Newcastle wing Adam Radwan added further misery for his old club by regathering his own grubber kick to score down the right. He then added a second late on when he took a cross-field kick cleanly and finished again.

Newcastle battled throughout but could not cope with Leicester’s pace, power and precision.
