Ireland rugby legend Ronan O’Gara says he would be willing to coach the French national team at a future World Cup tournament.

Despite being widely touted as a potential replacement for Andy Farrell when his contract expires in 2027, O’Gara has not ruled out taking a job with another nation.

The 47-year-old is highly rated in Fance having guided La Rochelle to successive European Cup triumphs and would consider leading their national team if the chance arose.

O’Gara told RMC Radio: “I’d like to win a World Cup. I dream of winning things, whether it’s with Ireland or France – I like it.”

France has traditionally been resistant to appointing head coaches from overseas, but the global nature of rugby may force them into a rethink.

Fabien Galthie’s failure to lead France to success at the 2023 Rugby World Cup and the Six Nations Championship earlier this year has cast doubt on his future.

France went into the latter tournament as the bookmakers’ favourites to win the title, but a heavy defeat against Ireland scuppered their chances.

The best betting sites in Ireland were forced into making a sizeable payout as punters piled on Farrell’s side to win their fourth Grand Slam.

While replacing Farrell would undoubtedly be the dream job for O’Gara, he acknowledges that the opportunity may not be forthcoming.

“I’m not French,” O’Gara added. “I’m trying to prove myself and put my name into the debate.

“It’s possible that, for Ireland, the next coach will be from New Zealand, South Africa or Australia – that’s just the way it is.”
