Sale Sharks scrum-half and former Scotland international Chris Cusiter has announced his retirement from professional rugby.

Cusiter achieved 70 caps for his country between 2004-2014 and also appeared for the British and Irish Lions on their tour of New Zealand in 2005.

The 33-year-old was signed by Sale in 2014, following spells with Glasgow Warriors, Border Reivers and Perpignan.

“This is the right time to hang up my boots and move onto the next challenge," said Cuister in a statement released by Sale.

"Playing for Scotland 70 times was more than I could have dreamed of growing up learning how to play rugby at Robert Gordon's College in Aberdeen.

"The memories of playing for Scotland and touring New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions will be with me forever, and I am grateful for all the incredible experiences I have been afforded through rugby.”

Cuister, who was part of the Scotland side that reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2007, will now start a Scotch whisky selling business in Los Angeles.

He added: "I cannot wait for the next chapter for me and my family as we embark upon this new adventure in California.”
