South Africa scrum-half Faf de Klerk is confident of stepping into the fly-half role if the situation demands as they look to defend the Webb Ellis Cup.

The Boks are already without Handre Pollard, who is sidelined with a calf injury which will see Mannie Libbok and Damian Willemse compete for the fly-half role while Willie le Roux is also on the cover.

With injuries being a major concern, de Klerk says he is prepared for the eventuality of taking the kicking responsibility.

“I’ve played there before, and I have trained there a lot. I think the best preparation is just training, making sure I am aligned and I know everything,” the former Lions No 9 said.

“I have played in the system for many years, so it won’t be too difficult for me to slot in there. It is going to be a challenge if I do have to. If it happens, I will step up and hopefully perform well.”

De Klerk will also be leading an inexperienced scrum-halves group in the squad that includes the likes of Cobus Reinach, Jaden Hendrikse and Grant Williams, who have a combined 37 Tests between them.

“All of them are excellent players and all of them bring something different to the party,” he added.

“Hopefully I can share some experiences that I have been through.

“They are very accomplished players. The only thing is just the pressure situations that they probably haven’t dealt with yet.

“From my side, it is just about doing my job and role. If I need to help somewhere, I will do that.”

Faf de Klerk is a respectable player and I believe he will have good performance and results in the next match.

In fact, every athlete on the competition field is very outstanding. Everyone sticks to their responsible positions and supports each other during the competition. I believe every player will give their best. Fans are also looking forward to their performance in the next match.
