New Zealand head coach Ian Foster has drafted Anton Lienert-Brown in the starting line up for the Rugby World Cup opener against France on Friday.

Lienert-Brown will replace the injured Jordie Barrett, who is sidelined with a knee injury and will be joining Reiko Ioane in the midfield with David Havili providing cover in the bench.

Scott Barrett, who was red-carded during the warm-up game against South Africa will be part of the second row that also has the experienced Sam Whitelock.

Foster has made three more changes to the line up with Nepo Laulala and Codie Taylor coming into the front row in the place of Dane Coles and Ethan de Groot respectively.

The final change sees Shannon Frizell replaced by Dalton Papali’i in the back row that also has Sam Cane and Ardie Savea.

"What makes it extra special is playing the host nation who are a very proud and in-form team," said Foster.

"World Cups are different. The initial goal is to qualify for the quarter-finals and to do that we must build our game through the pool stage.

"That starts in game one, where we have an opportunity to compete against one of the clear tournament favourites."
