Australia international Karmichael Hunt will miss the start of the upcoming Rugby Championship 2017 tournament after undergoing a surgery on an ankle syndesmosis injury.

The 30-year-old, who made his international debut in 2017 and started in all three June Tests was initially named in the 38-man training squad but now is set to sit on the sidelines for six to eight weeks as confirmed by a statement from Australia Rugby Union.

“Karmichael’s going to be out for 6-8 weeks,” read the statement.

“He ended up having a small operation on a syndesmosis injury so he’s got nothing doing for the first 10 days and then we’ll start working on him and his fitness level so as soon as he’s ready to go he’s straight back in.

“Obviously he’s very disappointed but there’s nothing you can do about it.

“When the injury happens you’ve got to get on with it, makes an opportunity for someone else in the team now.”

The injury to Hunt meant utility back Kurtley Beale is likely to remain in contention for the number 12 position as the Australian squad continue their training in Newcastle this week with players from Brumbies joining the squad on Thursday.
