Eddie Jones believes guiding the England team to the top position in the World Rankings will be his ultimate goal during his tenure as the head coach.

England are currently placed fourth in the rankings with 83.98 points behind New Zealand (96.10), Australia (89.33) and South Africa (87.66).

During the recently concluded World Cup, England became the first hosting nation to not reach the knockout stage following which Jones replaced Stuart Lancaster as the head coach.

The 56-year-old, who had worked with various countries in the past, including the likes of Australia, South Africa and Japan straightaway created an impact in England's Grand Slam victory, a feat they achieved after 13 years.

Jones believes the upcoming three-Test tour of Australia will be a perfect opportunity for England to redeem themselves with a target of 2019 World Cup.

Having worked with the Wallabies between 2001 and 2005, Jones wants England to target Israel Folau, David Pocock and Michael Hooper.

Jones also admitted rugby league convert Ben Te'o, who will play for Worcester in the next Aviva Premiership season, could be in contention for the Australian tour.

“Oh 100 per cent. The reason the RFU appointed me is to change the England national team,” Jones answered when asked if he would consider his tenure a failure if he does not take England to number one in the world rankings

"And the resources and the number of players we have here, demands that England should be number one in the world.

"If I look at England and what we have, there's no reason we shouldn't be number one in the world and that's what we're working towards.

"It's all set up for England to do well in Japan (at World Cup 2019).

"It would be great for us to be on the second of November in 2019 at the Yokohama Stadium in the World Cup final, and that's where we're aiming to be."

Apart from the highly rated Te'o, Jones also was impressed by Ospreys flanker Sam Underhill and revealed the 19-year-old could get an England call-up in the next six months.

Underhill, who had a two-year stint with Gloucester before switching to Ospreys had turned down a chance to qualify for Wales based on residential grounds.

Even though the current rules of RFU will not allow Underhill to feature for England in time for November's autumn Tests, Jones hopes the situation will be resolved soon.

"He's been playing very well for Ospreys," Jones told Sky Sports News.

"We've still got the situation where he plays outside of England, and we've got to sort that situation out.

"I think we're coming to a resolution and there's no doubt he'll be selected in the England squad in the next six months.

"Ben Te'o's definitely a possibility. You speak to people in Australia and they talk of him as a demi-god, so those sorts of players if they have the right attitude can come across to rugby and have an immediate impact.

"And he's one of those guys that could do that.”

Jones also had words of consolation for Sam Burgess, who returned back to rugby league following England's dismal World Cup campaign.

"I think Sam (Burgess) was in a difficult situation where he was playing two positions.

"If Sam came across to union again and he was put in the situation where he specialised in one position, I'm sure the outcome would be very different."
