Wales flanker Alisha Butchers will miss the remainder of the Rugby World Cup competition following a knee injury.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury during the tournament opener against Scotland last weekend which Wales went on to win 18-15.

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham expressed disappointment for Butchers but is hoping for her replacement to capitalise on the opportunity of playing in the showpiece event.

"We are extremely disappointed for her, she is a huge part of our group, both on and off the field," he said.

"What is important now is that we get her fixed as quickly as possible and give her the best care so we can get her back on the field.

"It is a big loss, but it gives someone else an opportunity and the next person has got to step up."

Meanwhile, Georgia Evans, who is also sidelined with a shoulder injury is in doubt for the second game against New Zealand.

Wales are positioned second in Pool A table of the Rugby World Cup with four points and will face New Zealand and Australia on 16th and 22nd October respectively.
