All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has proposed for an annual showdown between the Rugby Championship winners and the Six Nations Champions as a part of rugby's refurbished global season.

The World Rugby administrators are planning to introduce a new calendar to its delegates in their upcoming November meeting where a series of significant changes will be proposed to align the northern and southern hemisphere rugby starting from the year 2020.

However, it has been learnt that the Six Nations chiefs are hesitant to shift their tournament from their traditional February-March period.

The move to conclude club competitions in both hemisphere simultaneously will improve expectations of a reasonable mid-year window.

Hansen has also recommended a play-off between the European Cup winners and the Super Rugby winners.

"'It's a no-brainer," Hansen told the Daily Mail.

"You've got to say, 'what's best for our product so we can keep attracting people to come and watch it?'

"First, our players need a decent pre-season. You'd play club competitions simultaneously. We could have the European Cup winners play the Super Rugby winners and the Six Nations winners play the Rugby Championship winners. We need some goodwill to sort it out."

The present arrangement of the northern hemisphere teams touring south in June will most likely get scrapped, whereas the four-yearly prestigious British and Irish Lions tour will prolong.

The Lions coached by Warren Gatland are due to face the All Blacks next year and Hansen has already set his sights on a clean sweep.

'We'll want to win 3-0," he said.

"If the northern nations keep playing well they'll provide a headache for the selectors."
