New Zealand Rugby on Monday has announced that World Cup winning All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will continue with his role with the New Zealand team until the 2019 World Cup.

Following the World Cup triumph last year, Hansen said he intends to quit the job in 2017 once his contract with the New Zealand Rugby comes to an end and earlier in the month the 57-year-old revealed he will take a final call on his future prior to the Rugby Championship in August.

The former Wales coach has a phenomenal record during his stint with All Blacks having won 52 out of the 57 games ever since he took over the coaching in 2012 and recently his side completed a 3-0 series whitewash against Wales.

New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew said the decision to extend the contract was a straightforward one considering Hansen's success with the team.

"Steve's winning record is unsurpassed in the modern era," he said.

Hansen said that he had put a lot of thought process, keeping his personal life in mind while signing the contract extension and believes the desire to win the third consecutive World Cup has driven him to continue with his role.

"I often get asked, why would you go back when you've climbed the mountain?" he said.

"The simple answer, as I had more time to think about it, was that I don't know if we have climbed the highest mountain.

"There are still mountains to be climbed - we can still get better, and I can still get better as a coach.

"Three in a row - it's never been done before, and it's a challenge this team will really enjoy."
