There were European Rugby Champions Cup wins for Leinster, Ospreys, Toulon and Toulouse as the opening round of competition drew to a close this Sunday.

Pool 2: Leinster 25-20 Wasps
Pool 3: Toulon 28-18 Scarlets
Pool 4: Toulouse 30-23 Montpellier
Pool 5: Ospreys 42-7 Benetton Treviso

Ospreys 42-7 Benetton Treviso

A potentially serious injury to number eight Dan Baker was the only downside to Ospreys' 42-7 win over Benetton Treviso as they made a winning start to their campaign.

They wrapped up the bonus point before the hour-mark thanks to tries from Jeff Hassler, Rhys Webb, Dan Evans and Baker.

Evans crossed again and fly-half Dan Biggar added 17 points to ensure Ospreys top Pool Five ahead of next week's clash with Northampton Saints.

Baker left the field soon after his try following a collision and headed to hospital in a neck brace.

The Italians saw forwards Marco Fuser and Salesi Manu shown yellow cards as they had no answer to Pro12 leaders Ospreys.

However, they finally got on the scoreboard in the closing moments when winger Ludovico Nitoglia raced clear to touch down after a turnover on halfway.

Toulouse 30-23 Montpellier

A thrilling game at Stade Ernest-Wallon ended with home side Toulouse beating Montpellier 30-23 in Pool Four.

Jean-Marc Doussain's individual try proved to the match-winner for Toulouse as he ran through to collect his own chip kick and touch down.

Montpellier hit back with a late penalty but could offer no more.

After a cagy start, Timoci Nagusa crossed for the game's opening try to put Montpellier 10-3 up before Toulouse, through Yoann Huget's touchdown, grabbed the lead moments before the break, going in 13-10 up.

Wynand Olivier restored Montpellier's lead but it did not last long, Huget crossing for his second before Teddy Iribaren landed a penalty to level the scores at 20-20.

With 15 minutes to go, Doussain broke clear, chipped over the last line of defence and touched down. Toby Flood converted and then added a penalty to ensure that all Montpellier's late penalty earned them was a losing bonus point.

Toulon 28-18 Scarlets

2012 and 2013 Heineken Cup champions Toulon had to dig deep to beat Scarlets 28-18 in a closely-fought Pool 3 clash at Stade Félix-Mayol.

Although they started the stronger, they briefly ceded the lead to Scarlets before a Maxime Mermoz try enabled them to hold an 18-13 advantage at half-time.

Mermoz had earlier exchanged passes with Matt Giteau, who crossed for Toulon's opening try only for John Barclay to cross for Scarlets.

Scott Williams then saw an attempted clearing kick charged down and Mermoz reacted quickest.

Scarlets lost Rory Pitman to the sin-bin after an early high tackle and would also lose Emyr Phillips similarly in the second half as they struggled to keep Toulon at bay, although they managed to hold out during Phillips' absence.

However, soon afterwards, Halfpenny landed a monster penalty for the first points of the half after 65 minutes and Toulon's nerves were settled when Steffon Armitage touched down after more good work from Giteau close to Scarlets' line.

Toulon pressed for the fourth try that would have given them a bonus point but the final score of the game went to the Welsh side as Priestland broke clear and put Kristian Phillips in at the corner to deny the home side a five-point haul.

Leinster 25-20 Wasps

Leinster produced a stirring second-half comeback to get off the mark and deny Wasps a winning return to the top flight of European rugby.

The English side led this Pool Two clash 20-11 at half-time but were shut out in the second half.

Tries from Alapati Leiua and Christian Wade were converted by Andy Goode, who also landed a brace of penalties to put Wasps in the clear.

Darragh Fanning crossed for Leinster and Ian Madigan slotted over two penalties.

After the break, however, the home side powered to victory, Fanning crossing again after 51 minutes and Dominic Ryan after 60 minutes to put them ahead.

Madigan converted both and neither side could score in the final 20 minutes.
