Hurricanes registered their 11th win from 15 games as they defeated Lion 17-37 in their Super Rugby clash at Emirates Airlines Park on Saturday.

The win means Hurricanes have consolidated their second position in the group and fourth overall while Lions are at the third place in the South African group.

The opening 10 minutes saw Ngani Laumape and Aphiwe Dyantyi exchange tries as the teams were levelled 7-7 before a penalty goal from Shaun Reynolds in the 11th minute gave Lions a slender lead.

The honours were shared even at the end of the first half when Jordie Barrett kicked his maiden penalty goal at the stroke of half time with the teams heading into the break with 10-10 scoreline.

The Hurricanes upped the ante at the start of the second half through a double from Ben Lam in the 42nd and 48th minutes. Barrett kicked a conversion and a penalty as the scoreline became 10-25. A combination of Elton Jantjies and Lionel Mapoe played pivotal for the home side as they set up Dyantyi for his second to narrow down the gap to eight points.

Nevertheless, Dane Coles with back to back tries in the 65th and 76th minutes ensured Hurricanes completed a comfortable 20 point victory.
