Ireland fullback Jared Payne is set to undergo a lengthy rehabilitation period following a kidney injury which might keep him out action for "at least three months".

The 31-year-old suffered the blow during Ireland's 27-24 victory over Wallabies in Dublin last weekend and was replaced on the stroke of half-time.

The injury has also clouded his participation in the 2017 Six Nations tournament which begins on 4th February when Ireland take on Scotland at Murrayfield.

The news on Payne was confirmed by a statement released by Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).

"Jared Payne suffered a kidney injury in the first half of the Australia match," read the IRFU statement.

"He is expected to be out of the game for at least three months."

Earlier, Ireland defence coach Andy Farrell revealed that Payne suffered a "lower-limb tweak" but was eventually cleared to play the game against Australia after passing the fitness test.

Apart from Payne, Ulster wing Andrew Trimble also sustained a "tendon issue" in his foot in the final game of their autumn internationals and will be sidelined for two weeks.

Ireland had a successful run in their November Tests after winning games against New Zealand, Canada and Australia in the four games they played.
