Australia’s Commonwealth Games rugby 7s captain Stannard, has left from hospital in Sydney after reportedly being attacked. He has subsequently been ruled out of the Games after being hospitalized on Friday.

A police report stated that two men had been involved in a fracas in the Coogee suburb.

Sam Oliver, who is allegedly from the UK and has been backpacking, is due in court charged with ‘assault occasioning actual bodily harm’ on April 19.

Stannard left hospital on Sunday morning and Ben Whitaker, a general manager at Australian rugby’s governing body, said that he was an “extremely important” part of the squad and they had been left “shocked” by what had happened.

 Apparently, Stannard and his team mates Lewis Holland and Ben O’Donnell and coach Andy Friend had been out together prior to the reported incident and they managed to with strain the alleged, attacker following the incident, until the police turned up.

Whitaker stated “They did what they had to do, such an unfortunate incident and something they had to do due to the state James was in,”

Stannard was appointed skipper of Australia’s Commonwealth Games side after the previous Captain, Holland, pulled out  because of an injury.
