Wales have suffered a setback ahead of their autumn international opener against New Zealand on Saturday with centre Willis Halaholo withdrawn from the squad after testing positive for Covid-19.

Halaholo was withdrawn from the rest of the squad and has been placed under isolation for 10 days.

A statement released by the Welsh Rugby Union confirmed that Scarlets centre Scott Williams has been called as a replacement for Halaholo. Williams has played 58 times for Wales between 2011 and 2019. He was also part of their squad during the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

“Scarlets centre Scott Williams has been called into Wales’ squad for the Autumn Nations Series," read a statement from the Welsh Rugby Union.

“The 31-year-old Williams, who has previously won 58 caps, has been called in to the squad to replace fellow midfielder Uilisi (Willis) Halaholo, who has tested positive for Covid-19.

“Halaholo is now isolating, away from national squad camp, for 10 days. The WRU has notified, and is working closely with, Public Health Wales on the matter.”

Wales are already without their England bound players in Dan Biggar, Taulupe Faletau and Louis Rees-Zammit for the game against New Zealand as the game falls outside the traditional international window which means the club need not release them.

Following the game against New Zealand, Wales will also be facing South Africa, Fiji and Australia at Principality Stadium.
