Wales and British and Irish Lions rugby legend JPR Williams has passed away at the age of 74.

A champion of the Five Nations Grand Slam three times with his national team, he maintained an undefeated status in eight Tests as part of the Lions on celebrated tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974.

Following his rugby career, he pursued a profession in surgery and dedicated himself to the role of Bridgend's club president until his passing.

The ex-London Welsh, Bridgend, and Barbarians full-back was closely linked with the successes of Wales and the Lions during the 1970s.

Williams led both Wales and Bridgend, amassing 55 caps for his national team.

Across momentous Lions tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974, Williams earned eight Test caps.

"Bridgend Ravens are devastated to announce the passing of JPR Williams," Bridgend said in a statement.

"One of Bridgend's most-decorated players and an icon of world rugby, JPR served the club most recently as club president. Our thoughts are with JPR's family and friends at this sad time."

"One of the greatest ever Lions," the Lions posted on X. "A man who inspired so many.

"It is with huge sadness to learn that JPR Williams has passed away at the age of 74. All our thoughts are with his family and friends."
