Wasps 20-23 Exeter Chiefs, Twickenham Stadium
Scorecard

Gareth Steenson kicked the decisive penalty in the extra time after teams had their scores level at 20-20 in full time as Exeter Chiefs registered their maiden Aviva Premiership title defeating Wasps in the final at Twickenham Stadium.

This also becomes the first final to have gone on to extra time since 2014 when Northampton Saints defeated Saracens and Wasps' bid for their first title since they last won in 2008 continues.

Road to final:

Wasps defeated Leicester Tigers 21-20 to make it to the final while Exeter outplayed the European champions Saracens 18-16 to lock horns with Dai Young's men.

Jack Nowell opened the account of Exeter Chiefs in the 13th minute after an offload from Luke Cowan-Dickie found the winger as he went past the line and Gareth Steenson's conversion made it 0-7 in favour of Rob Baxter's men. Phill Dollman further pressed on the advantage as he evaded Christian Wade to score the second try for Exeter in the game as they raced to 14 points.

Exter Chiefs could have taken a bigger lead had they not turned down a number of kickable penalties but Jimmy Gopperth ensured he kept Wasps in the game with his penalty followed by a converted try as the difference between the two teams was down to four points at half time.

There was more intent from Wasps in the second half as Elliot Daly went past the line and a conversion followed by a penalty from Gopperth meant the Ricoh Arena outfit had 17 unanswered points and by the end of the third quarter they had a lead of 20-14 over Exeter.

Steenson showed moments of brilliance as he kicked two penalties in the final quarter forcing the game to go into extra time.

The first half of the extra minutes went scoreless though Exeter had a try denied by TMO as it was unclear on whether the ball was grounded but Steenson ensured the Sandy Park outfit went past the line with the decisive penalty.
