Scotland have suffered a double injury blow with veterans Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell withdrawn from the Six Nations squad ahead of the game against Italy due to injuries.

Hogg sustained an ankle injury during what was his 100th cap for Scotland in the game against Ireland at Murrayfield Stadium last weekend which the Dark Blues went on to lose 7-22.

Meanwhile, Russell had a knee ligament damage during the same game with a statement from the Scottish Rugby confirming that the duo will return back to their respective clubs for further rehabilitation.

Lock Richie Gray, who left the field early during last weekend's game with a rib injury continues to remain in the squad as he will be assessed again over the course of the week.

“Stuart Hogg sustained an ankle injury and will be unavailable for this weekend’s match against Italy. He will return to his club in due course for further management of this injury," read a statement from the Scottish Rugby.

“Finn Russell suffered an injury to one of his knee ligaments. He will return to Racing 92 to continue his rehabilitation.

“Richie Gray sustained an injury during the Ireland match and will remain with the squad to be continued to be assessed by medics.”

Edinburgh fly-half Charlie Savala has been called in to the squad, while Josh Bayliss has returned back after released to play for Bath last weekend.
