Scotland international Sam Skinner will miss the upcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan next month following a hamstring injury.

The 24-year-old suffered the blow during the recently concluded game against France at Murrayfield Stadium when he left the field in the 64th minute.

Skinner, who has been capped five times in the last two years underwent a medical assessment and it was revealed that the Exeter lock is unlikely to recover in time for the showpiece event.

Earlier Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend admitted that Skinner's injury is the most serious among the three blows that happened during the game against France that also saw Tommy Seymour and Blade Thomson sidelined.

Townsend has added Glasgow Warriors' Tim Swinson as cover in the squad. He has played in 38 Tests for the Dark Blues since making his debut in 2013 with his last appearance coming during the June series last year.

Scotland will face Georgia in a home and away fixtures before kick starting their World Cup campaign against Ireland in Yokohama on 22nd September.
