Scotland suffered a major blow on Wednesday as captain Greig Laidlaw has been ruled out for the rest of the Six Nations with an ankle injury.

The 31-year-old scrum-half, picked up the ankle injury and had to go off during the first half of Scotland's 22-16 loss to France in Paris on Sunday. A further examination has confirmed ligament damage to the right ankle.

Laidlaw will consequently miss Scotland's remaining fixtures against Wales, England and Italy.

Scottish Rugby confirmed Laidlaw will see a specialist this week to assess the damage and discuss the best course of recovery.

"Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2017 RBS 6 Nations with an ankle injury," the SRU said in a statement.

"Laidlaw will see a specialist later in the week to determine the best course of management and estimated time out of the sport."

Laidlaw played an instrumental role for his side by kicking two late penalties to give Scotland a thrilling 27-22 victory over Ireland in their opening match.

The injury now also raises questions over Laidlaw's fitness for the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand in June.
