Wasps back-row Sam Jones' chances of featuring for England in the upcoming autumn internationals has been dealt a major blow after he injured his ankle.

The 24-year-old former England Under-20, sustained the injury during the three-day training camp in Brighton and now will be assessed to find the extent of the damage.

A statement released by the Rugby Football Union confirmed the injury to Jones.

"Jones will undergo further examinations to diagnose the full extent of the injury," the statement said.

With James Haskell and Jack Clifford ruled out due to respective injuries, Jones was competing for the openside with Leicester Tigers' Mike Williams.

Earlier, the 56-year-old ruled out playing former England skipper Chris Robshaw and Nathan Hughes at seven which means his options have been limited now following Jones' injury.

"At seven we're looking for a destructive defensive player, not your traditional seven player because at the moment we don't have that in England," Jones said on Friday.

"We went down the route of trying to find that but it wasn't successful, so we're looking for a more of a destructive player like a Haskell. So Sam Jones and Mike Williams also come into that category."

England will kick-off their autumn internationals with a clash against South Africa at Twickenham on 12th November.
