Sale Sharks have been dealt a massive blow ahead of the decisive Premiership game against Worcester Warriors after 16 players report positive for Covid-19.

Steve Diamond's men are currently at fourth place with 64 points which is the same as Bristol Bears at fifth (separated by points difference) and will be needing a win in the final round to seal a top four finish.

According to a report, apart from the players, few members of the staff have also reported positive which means they would not be able to field a matchday 23 squad without the Academy graduates.

However, Sale Sharks have issued a statement confirming that they will be playing the game as per the schedule.

"Sale Sharks can confirm that their Gallagher Premiership round 22 match with Worcester Warriors, scheduled for 3pm on Sunday 4th October, will go ahead as planned.

"Although Sale Sharks have been subject to a number of positive COVID-19 tests. After a thorough consultation, the club, its healthcare professionals and rugby management are confident the fixture can be fulfilled safely in accordance with all COVID-19 guidelines.

"As directed by Premiership Rugby earlier today, the Sharks matchday-23 to face Worcester Warriors will be announced at 12:00pm on Saturday 3rd October".
