Rugby World Cup Match Preview - England vs Georgia

The return of skipper Lewis Moody is just one of the nine changes Martin Johnson has made to the side that eventually overcame Argentina in their opening World Cup game last Saturday.

The Bath flanker returns to the starting line-up after recovering from knee ligament damage which has restricted him to just five appearances in 2011, and replaces James Haskell at open-side.

The management will now be hoping that Moody's injury problems are behind as they can ill afford to lose another experienced performer, after Andrew Sheridan was ruled out of the tournament with a shoulder injury.

Matt Stevens has replaced the injured Sheridan at loose-head, the Saracens prop impressed when he came on against Argentina. He will bring a lot of energy and ball carrying skills to the front-row, as will Dylan Hartley who has replaced Steve Thompson at hooker.

Like Stevens, Hartley impressed during his cameo against the Pumas, and the changes to the front-row suggest that England will try and run the huge Georgian pack of their feet rather than out-muscle them.

England will have a new pair of second-rows taking the field on Sunday, with Tom Palmer making his first World Cup start in place of Louis Deacon, alongside the veteran of the England squad Simon Shaw who replaces Courtney Lawes, who is serving the first of his two game ban. Shaw's experience will be vital against Georgia, and as for his skills we know what he brings great carrying, a superb work-rate and intelligence.

The final change in the pack see's Northampton's Tom Wood replace Tom Croft at blindside flanker, Wood was one of the standout players in the Six Nations and brings a different style of play to Croft. He will hit the rucks hard and get around the park, but he has a good pair of hands and provides a great lineout option.

The other three changes come in the backs, where Ben Youngs will make his first start since the Six Nations in place of Richard Wigglesworth. Youngs scored the decisive try against Argentina and was England's best player even though he only played 30 minutes. He lifted the tempo of England's game, with his quick tap penalties and speedy service from the back of the ruck.

Youngs lines up alongside his Leicester teammate Toby Flood, who has ousted Jonny Wilkinson at fly-half, after the Toulon star missed five kicks at goal last weekend. Flood's selection means England will go with a more attacking style of play, he will stand flat and get Manu Tuilagi smashing over the gain-line. If Flood can get England into the right areas he has the ability to unleash the potent back three.

The final change comes at inside-centre where the much maligned Shontayne Hape replaces last week's captain Mike Tindall. This could be Rugby League converts last chance to impress in an international shirt after a string of below par showings. But this is a selection that Johnson has got spot on in my opinion. With Tuilagi running good angles outside him, Hape could really shine.

He has played the majority of his games with Tindall as his partner, we all know the Gloucester man doesn't run great lines and can't pick up much pace. Hape can offload the ball, but rarely gets the chance to show this in England's pedestrian midfield, but I believe alongside Tuilagi he can really show his skills.

Georgia have named the same starting XV that was beaten 15-6 by Scotland on Wednesday, like Argentina they will want to keep things tight and frustrate Johnson's side. The forwards showed their power against Scotland, but outside of that they struggle to do anything with the ball.

England cannot get drawn into an arm wrestle with this team or it could be a very long game. But Johnson's selection suggests that England won't try and play into the Georgians hands, if they can get the back three into the game they will find holes as Scotland did. The first 20 minutes will be a real battle, but after that England need to run Georgia out of the game. Get Ashton, Armitage, Foden and Tuilagi on the ball as much as possible and the result and the bonus point should come.
