New Zealand back row Ethan Blackadder is in doubt for the home series against Ireland following a shoulder injury.

Blackadder sustained the injury during Crusaders' home quarter-final game against Queensland Reds in which he was replaced in the 62nd minute.

Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson revealed that the 27-year-old is unlikely to be part of the remainder of the ongoing season which meant he will miss the semi-final and possibly the final if his side manages to reach.

"He's unlikely to be involved for the rest of the season for us, and hopefully it's not an operation" that's required, Robertson said.

"He will definitely have scans. It was pretty sore, as you can see. He's holding it up."

Having played nine times for New Zealand previously, Blackadder is likely to miss the series against Andy Farrell's men which will kick-off on 2nd July in Auckland.

Meanwhile, loose forward Dalton Papalii is also in doubt after having his appendix removed.

"After developing symptoms, he had an operation to remove his appendix on Friday," read a statement from Blues.

"The procedure was uncomplicated and he is recovering well although it is too early to forecast when he will return to play."
