Munster have confirmed the signing of New Zealand international Alby Mathewson on a short-term deal ahead of the 2018/19 season opener.

The 32-year-old will provide an injury cover to Ireland international Conor Murray, who is sidelined with a neck injury. Mathewson will join the Irish club subject to him being granted a work permit and has penned a four-month contract with Munster.

Mathewson has played for Wellington, Hurricanes, Blues, Auckland, Force, Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, Bristol, King County and Toulon since his debut that came in 2006.

The 5ft 8 inches scrum-half has played four Tests for New Zealand with all the appearances coming in 2010.

Munster are set to face Toyota Cheetahs in the 2018/19 season opener of Pro 14 at Thomond Park on 1st September.
