New South Wales Waratahs 0 - 29 Lions, Allianz Stadium

Lions started their Australasian tour on a positive note as they blanked New South Wales Waratahs 0-29 in their Super Rugby clash at Allianz Stadium on Friday.

Lions have now consolidated their position at the top of the South African Conference with their sixth win from nine games while Waratahs continue to remain at the Australian group despite the defeat.

After the first quarter went without a point, Madosh Tambwe crossed over in the 22nd minute following the foundation laid by Andries Coetzee and Kwagga Smith while Elton Jantjies slotted the conversion to make it 0-7 and that remained the only points before the break.

Waratahs though had a chance to open their account in the 34th minute when Kurtley Beale and Michael Hooper traded passes before the latter broke into the Lions' 22. He offloaded to Alex Newsome, who was tackled down by Ruan Combrinck before he could touch down.

The Lions showed more intent at the start of the second half with back to back tries coming from Kwagga Smith and Harold Vorster in the 44th and 50th minutes respectively while Jantjies slotted the extras on the second occasion as they scored 19 unanswered points.

The errors from Waratahs proved costly for them and an infringement from Harry Johnson-Holmes led to Jantjies kicking his penalty goal in the 71st minute to make it 0-22 and Marnus Schoeman with his try in the 77th minute helped Lions complete the bonus point victory.
