Gloucester head coach Laurie Fisher has confirmed that he will step down from his role with immediate effect.

His decision came after Gloucester's recent 27-30 Aviva Premiership defeat against Harlequins at Kingsholm Stadium where the visitors made a stunning comeback scoring 15 points in the final 10 minutes leaving the Cherry and Whites at ninth position in the table and are separated by the sixth placed Northampton Saints by nine points.

After the game, Fisher went on to the social media platform Twitter to take responsibility for the defeat.

"Unbelievable capitulation. Clearly not good enough. My responsibility. Time to make room for someone else."

A statement released by Gloucester on Monday further confirmed Fisher's departure from the club.

"Fisher met with club officials over the past 48 hours, and it was mutually agreed that he would leave his position," Gloucester's statement read.

"Gloucester Rugby would like to place on record its thanks for Laurie's hard work and commitment during his time at the club, and would like to wish him well in his future endeavours.

"The club will be making no further comment on the matter."

Fisher joined Gloucester from Brumbies and during his tenure, the English Premiership club went on to clinch the European Challenge Cup in 2014/15.
