Josh Beaumont the latest to keep England in the family

Sale Sharks number eight Josh Beaumont's selection in the England elite player squad on Wednesday continued a proud family tradition, given that his father Bill captained England to 1980 Five Nations Grand Slam glory.

Here we identify four father and son connections that have thrived at the top end of English rugby.

DICK GREENWOOD AND WILL GREENWOOD

Dick Greenwood won five caps for England, ending his international career as Test captain, before going on to be national coach between 1983 and 1985, winning just four of 17 games in charge. Greenwood's son Will helped England win the 2003 World Cup, while he was also a British and Irish Lion and enjoyed outstanding playing stints with leading English clubs Leicester and Harlequins. Only Rory Underwood has scored more tries for England than Greenwood, who won 55 caps.

ANDY FARRELL AND OWEN FARRELL

Andy Farrell enjoyed a stellar rugby league career with Wigan, England and Great Britain before switching codes in 2005 and going on to win eight union caps. He was an England assistant coach until leaving his post last month following a dismal 2015 World Cup campaign. Saracens fly-half and goalkicker Owen Farrell made his club debut at the age of 17, and first appeared for England in 2012. A British and Irish Lion, Farrell is an integral part of new England head coach Eddie Jones' plans.

MIKE FORD AND GEORGE FORD

Mike Ford, who is currently head coach of Aviva Premiership club Bath, enjoyed a 17-year rugby league playing career highlighted by him making 10 appearances for Great Britain. After initially working in union at Saracens, he became England defence coach in 2006, and was part of the coaching staff when the national team were World Cup finalists a year later. George Ford is a former world junior player of the year who began his club career at Leicester, but now plays for Bath. He made his England debut in 2014 and is one of European rugby's most exciting fly-halves.

BILL BEAUMONT AND JOSH BEAUMONT

Bill Beaumont won 34 England caps, highlighted by his role as 1980 Grand Slam skipper, while he also captained the British and Irish Lions on tour to South Africa later that year. He is currently chairman of the Rugby Football Union, while off the field he was a team captain on the BBC's long-running Question of Sport. Josh Beaumont made his debut for Sale Sharks while still a student at Durham University, and he will make his first appearance as Sale captain later this week against European Challenge Cup opponents Pau.
