Montpellier has confirmed that former South Africa international Jannie du Plessis has made his exit from the Top 14 club mid-season.

The 37-year-old joined Montpellier in 2015 after featuring for Super Rugby sides Cheetahs and Sharks with over 100 appearances for the Durban side. He was originally contracted with French club until the end of the 2018/19 season but extended his contract to provide World Cup cover for the club.

Montpellier confirmed the news on their official Twitter account.

"Another living legend bows out. He also delivered his last fight on Sunday. A huge thank you to Jannie du Plessis who has worn our colours with honour for more than four seasons," Montpellier tweeted.

He is now set to make a return to Super Rugby after Lions confirmed that they are in talks with the former South African prop.

Du Plessis played 70 Tests for South Africa since his debut in 2007 with his last appearance for the Boks coming in the 2015 World Cup.
