England defence coach Paul Gustard was all praise for his team's performance in Melbourne against Wallabies which helped them register their maiden Test series victory in Australia.

A two converted tries and three penalties coupled with an excellent defence skill ensured Eddie Jones' men went on to win the encounter at the AAMI Park by 7-23 over Wallabies.

England made a total of 169 tackles in the game as compared to Australia, who managed only 49. Jones in the post match conference lauded the role of Gustard in the historic victory.

Gustard revealed that he read the poem 'The Guy in the Glass' to the squad last week which he believes had inspired the team.

"I told them that I had lots of opportunities in life, off the field, on the field, and I wasted most of them," Gustard said.

"During my career I would look at other people for the blame, I thought I trained and worked hard, but I didn't.

"This was the players' opportunity to make history, to do something different, to be special, and if they look at themselves at the end of the day, can they say they emptied themselves out? I think that in this game they did."
