Highlanders have announced the signing of Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell ahead of the 2024 season.

Patchell made his professional rugby debut with Cardiff in 2011 and moved to Scarlets in 2016. He has played 160 first-team appearances for both the clubs before he was released by Scarlets in the summer.

He made his Wales debut at the age of 20 against Japan in 2013 and was part of their 2019 Rugby World Cup campaign. He was part of the Six Nations tournament earlier in the year but was omitted from the World Cup training squad.

Patchell said the offer from Highlanders "was too good to turn down".

"I’m delighted to be joining the Highlanders for the upcoming Super Rugby season," he told the club's official website.

"The opportunity to head to Dunedin was too good to turn down.

"Having watched Super Rugby from afar, I’m excited for the 2024 season to begin. I look forward to getting started and contributing as much as I can both on and off the field."

Highlanders head coach Clarke Dermody is delighted in acquiring the services of Patchell for the 2024 season.

“I like his attacking mindset and skillset, which should align well with the way we want to play the game.

"He defends well, has a sound kicking game and his ability to cover fullback will be a real asset to us during the season".
