Gareth Steenson hit the post with a late conversion for Exeter Chiefs as they went down to a 26-25 defeat to Gloucester at Sandy Park.

Playing in their 100th Aviva Premiership match, Exeter slipped to their third straight loss after Steenson missed his kick from the touchline after Thomas Waldrom had crossed eight minutes from time.

It was the final critical play of a thrilling second half that saw five tries - a stark contrast to a first period that Gloucester edged 6-0 thanks to two penalties from Greig Laidlaw.

Two early tries in the second half from Exeter's Jack Nowell and Matt Jess brought the game to life before Tom Savage and Ben Morgan dotted down for the visitors to make it 26-20 with 12 minutes remaining.

Billy Twelvetrees also kicked a long-range drop goal for the Cherry and Whites.

The Chiefs then got to within a point when Waldrom crossed but were to be denied anything more than a losing bonus point at the last.

The win moves Gloucester up to eighth in the table and the Chiefs remain in the play-off positions ahead of Sunday's matches.
