Former Wales and British and Irish Lions star will be seen in a new role as an expert after he was signed by BT Sport following his retirement last month.

The 29-year-old will join alongside Lawrence Dallaglio, Ben Kay, Austin Healey, Ugo Monye and Brian O’Driscoll for BT Sport's coverage of Heineken Champions Cup that kicks-off on 12th October.

“I'm delighted to be joining BT Sport and being part of such a great team," said Warburton.

"I'm looking forward to learning the ropes and adding my own insight and analysis to what is sure to be an exciting European tournament".

Warburton made his Wales debut in June 2009 and two years later he went on to captain the side and also led them into the Rugby World Cup later that year.

He also captained the Lions in the 2013 and 2017 tour of Australia and New Zealand respectively with Gatland's side registering 2-1 and 1-1 scoreline in the two series.

Head of BT Sport Simon Green announced the news and believes it will be a delight for the fans to see Warburton involved in the game as an expert.

"We are thrilled to welcome Sam Warburton to the BT Sport rugby team as his career begins a new chapter.

"He will be missed on the pitch, but rugby fans watching BT Sport will benefit as he brings a huge amount of knowledge and experience to our coverage of European club and international rugby.”

BT Sport is the home of the Heineken Champions Cup with the first game to be shown on BT Sport on 12th October as Leinster Rugby face the sting of the Wasps in Dublin.

BT Sport will show ten live Heineken Champions Cup games across a European group stage weekend, as well as a live highlights show every Sunday evening at 5.30pm with Craig Doyle, Lawrence Dallaglio and Brian O’Driscoll.

Viewers can also look forward to the return of Rugby Tonight hosted by Ugo Monye and Sarra Elgan on Wednesday evenings at 8pm.
