Fiji head coach Simon Raiwalui has announced that he will be stepping down from his role at the end of the year.

Raiwalui, who played for Fiji between 1997 and 2006 was appointed coach in February this year replacing Vern Cotter.

His decision to step down follows despite the Pacific Island nation managing to reach the quarter-final in the ongoing World Cup where they were defeated by England with a 24-30 margin. It was also Fiji's third quarter-final appearance overall and the first since 2007.

Earlier, Fiji defeating Australia was the major highlight of their campaign in the Pool stage and even came close to defeating Wales, the table topper before eventually losing by a six-point margin.

"I guess it is time to make it official, specifically what the next cycle will look like for Fiji Rugby," he said on the social media platform.

"I will not be seeking an extension of (my) employment with FRU past 31 December.

"Thanks again to the players, staff and all the supporters, it has been quite a ride!"
