Ex-Bucs OC Byron Leftwich contacts Pittsburgh about a potential job

The offensive coordinator for a Super Bowl-winner and former quarterback wants to help the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense get going.

Byron Leftwich has shown interest in a potential position with the Steelers, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic (via 93.7 The Fan). Leftwich won a Super Bowl in Pittsburgh as a backup for Ben Roethlisberger and worked as an offensive coordinator for Tom Brady in Tampa.

Leftwich May be Going to Pittsburgh

According to the report, Leftwich contacted the Steelers early this year. The Buccaneers fired the 43-year-old in January, and he is now open for employment. Despite the offense of the Buccaneers being a key component of Tampa Bay's 2020 Super Bowl season, Leftwich was fired. Leftwich led a Buccaneers offense that was top 3 in the NFL in scoring and at the very top in the league in terms of passing yards during his first two seasons as Brady's quarterback.

Leftwich was fired in part because the offense of the Buccaneers fell to 25th in the league in scoring in 2022. In all, Leftwich has worked as an NFL assistant coach for seven years, including two seasons as a QB coach, and five seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator.

Leftwich had a successful nine-year NFL career prior to entering coaching. In his career, he had 51 starts, including one while playing for the Steelers in 2012, his last year. Leftwich helped the Steelers defeat Washington in 2008 by taking over for an ailing Roethlisberger.

Leftwich's query probably took place against the background of Pittsburgh's offense's difficult start. The Steelers' offense has only scored five touchdowns in five games and has not yet produced a rushing touchdown. The Steelers lead the AFC North rankings and have a 3-2 record going into their Week 6 bye despite their offensive problems.
