England's title defence in the Women's World Cup 2017 final clash against New Zealand will be without Danielle Waterman after the fullback failed to make sufficient progress from a head injury.

The 32-year-old, who was part of the 2014 title winning team suffered the blow during the first half of the semi-final against France and was forced out of the field.

The news was confirmed by England head coach Simon Middleton in a statement released by the Rugby Football Union after Waterman failed the return to play protocols on Tuesday.

"It is disappointing to lose Danielle ahead of the final," Middleton said.

"She has delivered outstanding performances throughout the tournament and has been a highly-valued member of the squad.

"However, we have a number of strong options available to us as we begin preparing for Saturday's final against New Zealand."

Middleton might be tempted to move Emily Scarratt from midfield to replace Waterman as England bid to win their third World Cuo title.
