Bulls number eight Duane Vermeulen has been added to the South Africa squad ahead of the third and deciding Test against the British and Irish Lions.

Vermeulen has been on the sidelines since June when he underwent a surgery to address an ankle injury that he sustained during the training camp.

The 35-year-old has now linked up with the squad and will be assessed by the medical team.

“Duane will join us on Sunday and will be medically assessed as soon as possible,” said South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber.

“We will never risk a player who is not 100% fit but he brings experience to the squad and it will be great to have him with us.”

Nienaber also added that Pieter-Steph du Toit, who suffered a shoulder injury during the second Test will also be assessed on Sunday.

With the series levelled at 1-1, the final game of the series will be played at Cape Town Stadium on 7th August.
