World Rugby has announced that World Cup winners Dan Carter and Bryan Habana will be among the five players to be inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame.

The duo will be joined by France's Thierry Dusautoir, Australia's George Smith and Argentina's Juan Martín Hernández as they will be inducted at the World Rugby Awards in Paris on 29th October.

Carter, one of the dual World Cup winner with New Zealand is the highest points scorer in the history of international rugby. He also had won the World Rugby Player of the Year on three occasions joining his All Blacks team-mate Richie McCaw.

Habana went on to win the World Rugby Player of the Year in 2007 when the Boks went on to win the World Cup and has scored 67 tries in the 124 Test appearances. He is also joint first for tries scored at men’s Rugby World Cups with 15 touchdowns.

Meanwhile Smith has racked up 110 appearances for the Wallabies before announcing retirement in 2009. He made a remarkable return in 2013 when he was selected to start the deciding test of the Lions series and also captained the Wallabies on multiple occasions.

Dusautoir became only the second Frenchman to be named World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year in 2011, playing in three Rugby World Cups, won 80 caps, 56 as captain, and scored six tries while Hernandez helped Argentina to a bronze medial in 2007.

“Rugby World Cup 2023 is our 200th birthday party, the sport’s greatest celebration of togetherness,” World Rugby Chairman and Hall of Fam inductee Sir Bill Beaumont said.

“We are proud to be inducting five legends of the game, players who are indelibly linked to the remarkable Rugby World Cup story.

“Each have played a huge role in making the sport what it is today, exciting and inspiring in equal measure, while always being superb ambassadors for their sport. Their impact was greater than the field of play, it transcended sport and society, taking rugby to another level.
