Bulls director of rugby Jake White revealed that lock Jacques du Plessis is set to undergo a surgery following an Achilles injury.

White said Du Plessis, who rejoined the club from Montpellier has been struggling with the injury for a while and a decision has been taken to address the issue taking into account the long-term prospect.

The 6ft 7in lock has played 60 times for Bulls across two stints apart from featuring over 100 times for Montpellier.

“It is something that just flares up every week,” White said.

“We can’t go two weeks on, one week off, three weeks off, two weeks on.

“Looking at where we want to be in the next couple of years and having him as a player who can add value, we need to get the best out of him.

“He is not going to be available for a while.

“He has had this injury before. This is now the other foot, so we have to ensure he comes through nicely".

Bulls are positioned 13th in the United Rugby Championship table after managing two wins from seven matches.
