England scrum-half Jack van Poortvliet has been ruled out of the upcoming Rugby World Cup campaign in France following an ankle injury.

The 22-year-old sustained the injury in the recently concluded warm-up game against Wales at Twickenham Stadium when he accidentally collided with team-mate Ollie Lawrence.

A statement from the Rugby Football Union revealed that van Poortvilet will undergo a surgery to address the injury which will effectively rule him out of the showpiece event.

"It's really bad luck for Jack, and we send him our very best wishes for a swift and successful recovery," England head coach Steve Borthwick said on Monday.

Northampton's Alex Mitchell has been named as the replacement for van Poortvilet with Danny Care and Ben Youngs the other options in the 33-man squad for the scrum-half position.

England begin their campaign against Argentina in Marseille on 9th September. They will also be facing Japan, Chile and Samoa in the opening round on 17th September, 23rd September and 7th October respectively.
