The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has announced a boosted revenue last year following the successful hosting of the Rugby World Cup 2015.

The board has seen an increase of £199.2m from the previous year and now have declared its annual revenue for last year as £407.1million.

Even though the home team England was knocked out of the tournament in the first round, a whopping £228.1m was generated from the World Cup.

RFU chairman Ian Ritchie was pleased with the outcome and is hoping to take forward the game at domestic and international level.

"This was a truly exceptional year.

"Despite the huge disappointment of England's early exit from our home Rugby World Cup, by running the widely acclaimed 'most successful Rugby World Cup ever' we have delivered significant investment into rugby both at home and globally.

"The legacy will continue to benefit our community clubs and the sport at every level."
