Former British and Irish Lion Andy Powell has confirmed a codes switch back to rugby union with a new contract at Newport Gwent Dragons from the start of next season.

After a short stint with Wigan Warriors in the Super League, after being released in January, Powell will return to his original code on Welsh soil.

Having won 23 caps for Wales, combined with time at Cardiff Blues, London Wasps and Sale Sharks, the 32-year-old powerhouse flanker will bring plenty of experience to a struggling Newport side.

The Dragons finished ninth in this year’s RaboDirect Pro12, with just seven wins to their name, the bottom Welsh province ahead of only Connacht, Zebre and Treviso last.

However, Powell will not be dissuaded as the move reprersents a homecoming, having started out at Newport RFC.

"I am extremely delighted to be back in Wales. I have very fond memories of playing for Newport RFC and can remember the great support we had from fans when I previously played for them," he told the club's official website.

"I have been very impressed through the season with both Kingsley and Lyn's ambitions for the region. I am very excited for the challenges that lie ahead and look forward to challenging the other Welsh regions for silverware."

Dragons head coach Kingsley Jones, added, "I am very excited that we are bringing Andy back to Gwent to play.

"He has the X-Factor and brings a lot to the team dynamics not forgetting his great ball carrying skills.

"He will be coming back here to challenge the likes of Taulupe Faletau for a first team spot as well as adding experience to the squad."
