South Africa fly-half Pat Lambie will miss the second Test against Ireland in Johannesburg following the concussion he suffered in the opening game of the series in Cape Town.

Lambie was tackled by Ireland flanker CJ Stander in the 22nd minute of the game which the Springboks went on to lose by 20-26.

The 25-year-old was carried off the field while Stander was red-carded by French referee Mathieu Raynal with a disciplinary hearing on Sunday, which now is adjourned to Monday.

South Africa coach Allister Coetzee confirmed that Lambie will be missing the second game of the ongoing series and a replacement will be named on Sunday.

“He was concussed and must go through the medical protocol. He won’t play at Ellis Park but he could be back for the last game of the series. He had X-rays on his neck and it’s okay.”

Despite being one-man down for most part of the game, Ireland, riding on a clinical performance from their fly-half Paddy Jackson and tries from Jared Payne and Conor Murray went on to register their first victory against the Springboks in South Africa.

Stander, who qualified to play for Ireland on residency grounds earlier in the year is in danger of missing out on the second game but coach Joe Schmidt believes the citing was harsh on the 26-year-old.

“CJ’s got both hands extended, once you’re in the air you can’t change your trajectory," he said.

“I know CJ and Pat are friends... CJ was upset that Pat was hurt as much as he was upset that he had to leave the field. It’s one of those things that happens.”
